Festivals in Bangladesh




Different festivals come with different colors all the year-around and people in this country celebrate them with befitting manners. Among the festivals Pahela Baisakh or the 1st day of Bengal New Year, Independence Day, Victory Day, Language Movement Day Eid-ul-Fiter, Durga Puja, Charismas Day, Buddha Purnima are the most mentionable. Some of them represents Bengali cultural heritage while the others are the religious occasions of the Hindus, Muslims, Christians or the Buddhists. The ceremonies of those programmes are so emotional that they all deserve a detailed description.
Pahela Baisakh: It is the most pompous occasion of Bengali culture. The whole country takes a festive look on that occasion. Woman wear sari of special color and special border on that day. Men war Panjabi and pajama. People usually take fermented rice with hilsha fish and peppers. The Dhaka University students and the members of different cultural groups arrange panta rice and hilsha fish and serve them to people in exchange of money. They arrange a huge stage below the banyan tree of the Ramna Park and perform cultural programs related to Baisakhi tradition. Every house wears a ceremonious mood. The shopkeepers hold halkhata to get dues the customers. Baisakhi fair is organized in hundreds of prominent places of the country.
International Mother Language Day: Like Pahela Baisakh the Bengalese celebrate the 21st February as International Mother Language Day. The day is a national holiday. People pay homage to the martyrs of language movement of 1952. They most often wear pajamas, Panjabi and black badges on that day. They put flowers in the Shahid Miner.
Independence Day: 26th March is celebrated as the Independence Day. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared. The Independence of Bangladesh from the autocratic rule of the Pakistani rulers. After a nine month bloody war Bangladesh became independent. So the people of Bangladesh observe the day with great honors. The day is also a national holiday.
Victory Day: December is observed as the victory day. The whole country takes a ceremonies look. People pass the day with their family members and often they visit their relatives. Special food is served in jails and orphanages. Bangladeshi community all over world also observe the day with due honor.
Eid-ul-Fitr & Eid- ul-Ajha: These are the most authoritative religious festivals of the Muslim community. In this occasion, people celebrate these two occasions in a colorful way. Both the rich and poor try to buy new cloths for the members of the family. In the morning the males go to the Eidgahs or mosques to say their Eid prayers. The females cook special food items on that day. Neighbors visit each other’s house while the relatives and friends also visit and entertain each others. Eid-ul-Ajha is another festival of the Muslims. They sacrifice domestic animals in the name of the Almighty Allah.
Durga Puja: It is the greatest religious festival of the Hindue community. People celebrate it with great solemnity. Sharashoti is another religious occasion for the Hindus. On the occasion they put on new dress and have special food.
Christmas Day: 25th December is a religious occasion for the Christians. It is also a national holiday. They go to the churches. People exchange greetings and gifts.
Buddha Purnima: Buddha Purnima is the most important religious festival of the Buddhists. They put on new dress and exchange greetings and gifts.
All the festivals are observed here with great honor and solemnity. People live here harmoniously. So they respect each other religious or cultural festivals. Regarding the Bengali cultural festivals, people of all the communities are very cordial. Actually, their festivals help them to remain close and united under the Bangladeshi national flag.
